Johnny Dangerfield Reflects on 37 Years of Automotive Industry Experience

By | John Dangerfield, Johnny Dangerfield, Johnny Suzuki

Johnny Dangerfield | 37 Years in Automotives

Johnny Dangerfield

Johnny Dangerfield is an automotive guru. From fresh-faced salesman to founding and running South Carolina’s number one independent automotive dealership, Dangerfield’s 37-year career represents something which is unarguably impressive. From Honda, Toyota, Ford, and Saturn, to Pontiac, Buick, GMC, and more, Dangerfield quickly rose through the ranks working for some of America’s best-loved automotive brands.

In fact, by the age of 28, less than 10 years into his career, Johnny Dangerfield had taken on a general manager role within one of the country’s most successful automotive dealership groups, specializing in the Saturn brand. This, at the time, made him the youngest general manager across any of the group’s 85 locations.

Within three years, John Dangerfield had taken another general manager position, this time specializing in Pontiac, Buick, and GMC. Here, and in just two short years, he successfully increased sales volumes by over 350%.

Shortly after, in 1995, Johnny Dangerfield left to establish his own venture – Johnny’s Truck and Auto Center in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Within five years, the independent automotive business had moved to a purpose-built facility where it continued to grow, before adding Johnny’s Accessories Shop.

Next, Johnny Dangerfield committed to a Suzuki franchise after being approached directly by the Japanese motor corporation. After being named the number one Suzuki dealer in the U.S. for market penetration within a year, what followed was a second Suzuki franchise and site. Two years later came a General Motors location in Easley, while a further 12 months on, John Dangerfield established another additional site in Myrtle Beach.

The Global Automotive Manufacturing Industry is Forecasted at $1,653.7 Billion (2018)

By late 2007, John Dangerfield now had four franchise locations and two pre-owned lots, with over 350 employees. Within two years, however, the economic downturn in the U.S. had hit the automotive industry hard. Suzuki filed for bankruptcy in 2009, putting an end to Johnny Dangerfield’s franchises, while around the same time General Motors pulled the plug on 500 dealerships, including his Easley location.

Downsizing operations, as a result, the focus of Dangerfield’s attention returned to the Moncks Corner business established in 2003.

In 2011, Johnny Dangerfield had taken Johnny’s Truck and Auto Center to Summerville. Along with two of his other automotive business interests. This established Automaxx of the Carolinas. Johnny Dangerfield’s unparalleled experience saw the business quickly grow.

By 2012, Automaxx of the Carolinas was selling over 700 vehicles per year.

By 2014, that number had more than doubled to almost 1,500.

Today, a further four years on, Johnny Dangerfield and his growing team are routinely selling over 2,000 vehicles annually. Automaxx of the Carolinas is now the #1 independent automotive dealership in the state of South Carolina.

What’s more, feedback for the business couldn’t be better. “Visiting Automaxx was the best car buying experience I’ve ever had. Our salesperson was extremely professional, patient, and did not pressure us to buy,” says one recent customer of their experience. “Automaxx has given us a wonderful experience. Our salesperson was the best in helping us with the purchase. They are great at making everything super easy and was very polite throughout the entire process. I highly encourage anyone to buy their next car at Automaxx,” suggests a second.

John Dangerfield looks back on 10 years of sporting achievements

By | Johnny Dangerfield

From a foray in motorsport to numerous golf tournament wins and ties to a prominent church’s sports ministry, Johnny Dangerfield’s love of sports is evident.

A keen sportsman, John Cornelius Dangerfield has numerous ties to motorsport, golf, and a variety of other sporting activities and affiliations. During the last decade, the South Carolina sportsman has scooped multiple tournament victories at prestigious golf venues including Bulls Bay Golf Club and the Daniel Island Club.

Dangerfield is also an active supporter of Seacoast Church and has now spent several years backing the organization’s sports ministry. A non-denominational church located close to Dangerfield’s home in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Seacoast Church is one of just a small number of such organizations to boast its own sports ministry, and of which the sportsman is an avid supporter. Backed by individuals such as Dangerfield, Seacoast Sports has gone from strength to strength in recent years.

“While I have a deep love for many sports, it’s golf about which I’m most passionate,” reveals Dangerfield, who has also taken part in high-octane motorsport events such as the Annual Discount Auto Parts 200, held in Lakeland, Florida.

Owner of Automaxx of the Carolinas, an automotive dealership based in Summerville, Dangerfield has scooped numerous golf trophies in the last decade. From Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, where he picked up tournament wins in 2008, 2015, and 2017, to Charleston’s Daniel Island Club where he scooped back-to-back tournament wins in 2017 and 2018, Dangerfield is indeed a passionate golfer. “At the Daniel Island Club, my golf partner and I enjoyed back-to-back tournament wins in both the 2017 Fall Hunt and 2018 Spring Chase tournaments,” he reveals.

Off the golf course, Dangerfield also remains thoroughly committed to his affiliation with Seacoast Church. “John has been a godsend for the sports ministry here at the church,” explains Seacoast Church director Wes Koch. “When I first met John and mentioned that I was the director for the sports ministry at Seacoast, he was quick to respond.”

“He said to me, ‘If it has to do with God’s kingdom and sport… I’m in!'” adds Koch of Dangerfield and his ties to the religious organization’s sports ministry. The Automaxx of the Carolinas owner has subsequently earned the title of Seacoast Sports’ most trusted and active supporter, according to Koch.

“John consistently goes further than asked,” adds church director Koch, wrapping up, “and there’s no way we could do what we do at Seacoast Sports without his help. I count him as a blessing from God and someone I can rely on for anything.”

Johnny ‘Suzuki’ Dangerfield reveals golfing highlights

By | Johnny Dangerfield

During a decade spent honing his skills as a pro golfer, Johnny ‘Suzuki’ Dangerfield has enjoyed numerous great successes.

Starting with a win at Awendaw’s Bulls Bay Golf Club in 2008, Dangerfield has collected trophy after trophy in the years which have followed. Dangerfield, known locally and to friends as Johnny Suzuki, has gone on to make a real name for himself among the golfing fraternity, particularly on the South Carolina golf scene.

Further to his early Bulls Bay Golf Club win, Johnny Cornelius Dangerfield, owner of Automaxx of the Carolinas, has claimed several further victories at the club, including last year, and three years ago, back in 2015.

Set against the Atlantic Ocean, Bulls Bay has seen a once flat stretch of Lowcountry coastline transformed into a landscape reminiscent of the great links golf courses of Scotland and Ireland. “It’s a beautiful location,” adds Dangerfield, “and offers one of the purest golf experiences out there.”

A particular fan of another local golfing haunt, the Daniel Island Club, Dangerfield and golf partner Marc Horne recently enjoyed back-to-back tournament wins at the sporting hot spot, just outside of Charleston. Here, Dangerfield and Horne were lucky enough to scoop both the 2017 Fall Hunt and 2018 Spring Chase tournaments.

A through and through philanthropist, Dangerfield’s efforts on the golf course have seen him able to raise the profiles of a number of organizations, charities, and other good causes with which he’s affiliated. These include Mount Pleasant-based Seacoast Church, of which he is heavily involved in the church’s sports ministry.

“Johnny has been a godsend for the sports ministry here at the church,” explains Seacoast Church director Wes Koch. “When I first met Johnny and mentioned that I was the director for the sports ministry at Seacoast, he was quick to respond.”

“He said to me, ‘If it has to do with God’s kingdom and athletics… I’m in!'” adds Koch of his first meeting with Dangerfield.

Over three years later and true to his word, the Automaxx of the Carolinas boss has earned the title of Seacoast Sports’ most trusted and active supporter. “Johnny consistently goes further than asked,” says Koch, “and delivers more than we deserve.”

Mount Pleasant resident Dangerfield has also ventured into other areas of sport, including taking part in high-octane motorsports events such as the Annual Discount Auto Parts 200 presented by ROL Gaskets at the USA International Speedway.

“While I do have a deep love for many sports,” he adds, wrapping up, “it’s golf about which I’m most passionate, and I very much look forward to future tournaments at both Bulls Bay Golf Club and the Daniel Island Club.”
